Quad - Artera STEREO: ultra compact power amplifier - efficient & audiophile!
Quad has always been proud to offer music lovers the complete solution.
Each quad component blends perfectly with other parts of the hi-fi system and is equipped with a single target - "as close to the original sound" as possible.
The products of the Quad Artera series fulfill this aim in an excellent way.
Attention: Artera STEREO by Quad is also available in other colour finishes!
From the transformer to the input terminals, each section of the Artera has been engineered from the ground up to ensure power, musicality and stability.
The Artera STEREO produces 140 Watts RMS per channel – ample power for driving first-class loudspeakers, unfaltering even under high dynamic and transient conditions thanks to the patented Current Dumping technology.
Special attention has also been paid to the newly developed balanced XLR inputs. The robust connections are yet another string to the Artera Stereo's bow, with an incomparable signal to noise ratio.
The current dumping circuit consists of a very high-quality low-power amp that provides the details of the signal, while a high-performance current dumping section ensures that the speakers are in control being held. These two amplifier circuits are combined with a precise network to perfectly match the finesse of the class A output to the power of the current dumper.
This technology eliminates issues such as crossover distortion, quiescent current setting, thermal tracking and transistor matching. There are no internal adjustments or modifications and the choice of power transistor types is less restrictive.
Artera sets a new standard of hi-fi electronics by QUAD.
Each Artera series model fuses modern digital connectivity with signature Quad amplification technologies. Styled with grace, influenced by classic Quad systems with a modern twist, each Quad Artera system is a beauty to look at, while demonstrating a life-like detail in every track.
Quad has crafted their new power amplifier and control unit / CD player with some of the latest high-definition audio technologies: state of the art DAC chips, DSD file processing and more.
With rugged heat-sinks either side, combined with a beautiful aluminium facia, Artera is a modern statement piece for your living room, with a nod to the hi-fi heritage by Quad.
Individually, each Artera component has been engineered to perform at the top of its class.
Combine them to form a complete high performance music system and the standard they set is higher still.
The Artera range combines the qualities that have made Quad one of Britain’s most revered hi-fi marques for many decades with fresh industrial design and the very latest high-performance audio technologies.
Artera’s crisp, clean aesthetic both evokes Quad’s past and looks forward to the future, with a textured aluminium front panel, thick glass top and CNC-routed heat sinks on either side. The housing provides a rugged structure that resists interference from external vibrations, while the facia of each player incorporates an intuitive touch-sensitive control, contributing greatly to its sleek design.
Quad is one of the English hi-fi forges with a long tradition. Quad hi-fi devices of the first era are characterized by craftsmanship, quality and idiosyncratic design. Quad means: Quality Unit Amplified Domestic.
1936 was the founding year of the company Acoustical Manufacturing Company in London by Peter Walker. In 1941, the company moved from London to Huntingdon. In 1949 the first tube amplifier QUAD QA12 P was introduced. From 1953 the tube amplifier QUAD II and the preamplifier QUAD QC II are manufactured. This is the debut of the myth Quad. Other groundbreaking developments included the ESL-57 electrostatic loudspeaker Quad ESL-57 in 1957 and the QUAD 22 preamplifier in 1958. In 1967, QUAD began introducing transistors to its current productions, the incomparable QUAD 33 and the QUAD 303 amplifier.
In 1975, the current dumping circuit was introduced which is based on the concept of the then new amplifier QUAD 405. 1982 followed the electrostatic loudspeaker ESL-63. Since 2016, new product lines such as Artera, Vena and the Z speakers have been added. Even with these products, Quad remains true to design and sound, but integrates the current technologies.
Despite their attractive simplicity, the three Artera components deliver exceptional sophistication beneath the skin. At the heart of the Artera Play and Artera Solus nestles the ESS Sabre32 9018; a 32-bit, eight-channel hybrid multi-bit Delta-Sigma DAC considered by many to be the finest D/A converter chip available for stereo sound.
This is Quad's first series to utilise the ESS Sabre DAC, and external digital sources can benefit from its exceptional quality via a range of digital inputs. These include USB, with support for PCM data up to 32-bit/384kHz and also DSD64/128/256, ensuring the Artera Play+, and Artera Solus are fully equipped to make the most of today's hi-res music formats, as well as future advances in ultra-high-definition digital sound.
Filters To Suit Every Ear
For CD replay, a new slot-loading mechanism buffers data from the disc before feeding it asynchronously (in order to minimise time domain errors known as 'jitter') to the DAC section. Four digital filter options enable users to tailor the Artera Play's, and Solus's sound, with both CDs and external digital sources, to suit personal taste and the nature of the source material.
Each player within the series features a preamp section which boasts a balanced Class A output stage. Two coaxial and two optical inputs cater for external digital sources alongside the USB input, with a pair of RCA phono inputs handling analogue sources. Analogue outputs are supplied in both single-ended RCA and balanced XLR varieties; a pair of digital outputs (optical and coaxial) and a 12V trigger output complete a comprehensive array of connectivity options.
Iconic Amplifier Technology
The inclusion of full analogue/digital preamp functionality means that the Artera Play+ can be connected directly to a power amplifier, and its perfect partner in this regard is the Artera Stereo. This compact yet potent power amp sports the latest iteration of Quad's famous Current Dumping topology, first introduced in the legendary Quad 405 - one of the most lauded British audio components of all time and still the only amp design to have earned a Queen's Award for Technological Achievement.
Current dumping is essentially a method of marrying the superior sonic purity of Class A amplification with the greater efficiency of Class AB. An extremely high-quality, low-power Class A amplifier provides the signal quality, while a high-power current dumping section delivers the muscle to keep the speakers under control. These two amp circuits are combined via a precision network to perfectly impose the finesse of the Class A output onto the power of the current dumper. The result is a relatively compact and cool-running power amp capable of delivering a captivating combination of dynamic power, vice-like grip and sumptuous sonic detail.
For those seeking the huge connectivity options of Artera's players in an all-in-one solution, the Artera Solus fills that niche, not only with a built in pre-amplifier but also housing a substantial power amplifier, CD player, DAC and bluetooth technology.
A Musical Experience
Every Artera component has been designed to deliver the best possible user experience. The build is solid, the controls straightforward and the sound painstakingly tuned to maximise musical enjoyment. The natural, unforced sonic scale, pace and dynamism that made the 99 Series so highly rated remains intact, imbued with even greater resolve to deliver the most captivating musical performance possible, whilst maintaining highly competitive pricing throughout the range. Quad products have always been about the musical experience, first and foremost, and never has this been better exemplified than by the performance of the new Artera series.
Accuracy and Clarity
Using audiophile-class components, highly specified transformers, multi-layer circuitboards and the most advanced software available, the design builds upon classic Quad sound with accuracy and clarity. Encased in a modern aluminium chasis design constructed using superior class alloy and finished in deep grey with a matte black front panel, Artera stays true to Quad's bold yet stylishly elegant signature aesthetic.
